It is quite a family when you consider all the members, but when it comes to progressive jackpot gaming online, the Mega Moolah slots are probably as famous as it gets.
From the original games’ first release through to the latest offering that was released in 2020, the different Mega Moolah slots have offered jackpot slot players an enchanting and unusual choice of games to play over the years.
Of course, when it comes to the variety of Mega Moolah slots you can play, the choice has been somewhat unusual over the years. Some games are now no longer available, others are older and have a somewhat dated look and design and then, of course, there is the new crop of games that have been designed to sit comfortably alongside the original.
So in this article, we are going to take a look at the different Mega Moolah slots that there have been over the years, learning a little about each type of game, whether it has triggered a top progressive jackpot prize and whether it is still available to play right now, or not.
When it comes to the family of Mega Moolah slots it all beings with Microgaming and the release of arguably their biggest and most important slot game in the company’s history.
- Mega Moolah
Released globally some years ago the original Mega Moolah game was not just the game that fathered all Mega Moolah slots, but it is also the game that perhaps changed the landscape when it came to online progressive jackpot slot gaming.
This 25-line, 5×3 reel slot was based on an African safari theme and among the symbols on the reel were a number of creatures including zebras, giraffes, elephants and the lion, who also acted as the game’s Wild symbol.
The witch doctor symbol was the Scatter symbol and landing three or more of those across the reels triggers the Free Spins bonus game, where you get 15 Free Spins, complete with a 3x multiplier on all wins and the chance to trigger more Free Spins from within the bonus round.
However, what marked out Mega Moolah as different to other slot games was the size of its progressive jackpot prizes. The Mini and Minor offered smaller value prizes, but the Major jackpot was seeded at £10,000 and the Mega jackpot was guaranteed to be worth at least £1,000,000 but had the potential to grow well beyond that – as we have witnessed over the years.
It was how the jackpot could be won that perhaps sealed the deal in terms of Mega Moolah’s greatness. The fact that any spin, at any time, by any player in the world could be a winner thanks to the randomly triggered Jackpot Bonus Game, where you were guaranteed to win one of the four jackpot prizes, was a stunning move and one that perhaps changed the face of progressive jackpot slot games forever.
- Mega Moolah skins
The release of the first of the Mega Moolah slot skins proved to be such a hit that it didn’t take long to realize that people wanted to play for the jackpot prizes as often as they could and in as many ways as they could and the options for players to play for the Mega Moolah jackpot prize increased fourfold with the release of three additional Mega Moolah games.
These were Mega Moolah Summertime and Mega Moolah 5 Reel Drive, which were both released together and this was followed a couple of months later by Mega Moolah Isis.
What was striking about these games was how similar they all were, having the same 5×3 reel set up, a similar sized jackpot prize, but different number of lines in play. Summertime boasted 9 pay lines in play, 5 Reel Drive had 15 lines in play and Isis boasted the highest number of lines in play with 25.
All three games remain playable today at different casinos, although they are not as widely available or as readily promoted as some of the more modern Mega Moolah slots, or indeed the original game.
Of the three games, only the 5-Reel Drive version of the slot has produced winners of the biggest jackpot prize with at least two known big Mega jackpot winners coming from playing the game.
- Lord of the Rings & The Dark Knight
These two games share a similar number of features in the history of Mega Moolah slots and the first of these is that they were the only two Mega Moolah slots that were based directly on film or TV tie ins and secondly, they are the only two games in the series that you can, at the time of writing, no longer play.
They are also unusual because one slot took over the place that was initially vacated by the other. The Lord of the Rings slot was the first of the two to hit casinos and it was a 243 Ways to Win slot that was based on the legendary film series directed by Peter Jackson.
However, a relatively short time after the game was released, the licencing for the game ran out and so Microgaming decided to take a fresh approach to offering something new. With a licence acquired for another Film tie in, the Christopher Nolan-directed The Dark Knight slot, the company retired the Lord of the Rings game and replaced it with The Dark Knight.
This was a similar game set up to Lord of the Rings but there was one notable difference between the two and that was the Dark Knight slot actually produced a winner. In fact, it was one of the very first big winners in the history of all Mega Moolah slots with Jon Orchard from Lincolnshire in the UK landing a then record win amount for all Mega Moolah slots with a £5.88 million win back in December 2012.
However, just as with the Lord of the Rings slot, the licensing expired with The Dark Knight and soon it too was removed from the selection of games you could play for the Mega Moolah jackpot prize on. That left just four Mega Moolah slots to play and that was the situation for a number of years.
- Mega Vault Millionaire
With no new Mega Moolah slots for a number of years, people wondered what Microgaming’s next move would be for their most popular progressive jackpot slot game. Well the answer was an exciting one and that was the company, which was a partner for the Casino Rewards Network, decided their next move would be to produce an exclusive Mega Moolah-powered slot for that group of casinos and the result was the Mega Vault Millionaire slot, which hit casinos in 2019.
The game is very much based on a similar structure to the original Mega Moolah slot, although it has been given updated sound and graphics and is based on a bank vault theme. However, the game boasts similar Wild symbols and a very similar Free Spins game to that which you would find in the original.
What is different and exciting for many players is the fact that the Mega Vault Millionaire slot can only be played at Casino Rewards casinos and that the game has its own Jackpot Bonus Game, which rather than a single wheel to spin, sees up to three bank vaults unlocked by spinning successive reels. The more vaults you unlock, the greater the potential value of the win that you can land.
The Mega Vault Millionaire slot has produced a number of Major Jackpot winners since the game was released at Casino Rewards, but it is yet to produce a Mega Jackpot winner at the time of writing.
- Atlantean Treasures: Mega Moolah
When news that Casino Rewards would be getting its own game to add to the Mega Moolah slots available to play, speculation was rife that one or maybe a couple of new Mega Moolah slots would be released and in February 2020, the first of these new games went on general release at casinos across the globe.
This was the new Atlantean Treasures Mega Moolah slot and this was a very different option to all the Mega Moolah games that had preceded it. The new game was one of the popular 5×3 reel, Expanding Wilds, 10-pay line, Win Both Ways across the reel slots that have proven to be especially popular in recent times.
Based on the theme of Atlantis and with an enchanting Mermaid as the Wild symbol, which appears on the middle three reels and Expands to cover any reel it lands on, as well as granting you one free respin of the other reels, the game-play mirrored a number of slots which became very popular using a similar system to play.
At 0.10 per spin, it is also one of the cheapest Mega Moolah slots to play, although not every spin can be a winner and it is only those where you collect a golden pearl, which is overlaid on symbols on the reels, which could serve as a trigger to the Jackpot Bonus game.
Speaking of the Atlantean Treasures’ Jackpot Bonus Game, this harks back to the original Mega Moolah, by being just a single wheel which you will spin to decide which of the four jackpot prizes you will win, should you be fortunate enough to trigger the jackpot game.
As expected, the Atlantean Treasures Mega Moolah slot has proven to be a smash hit success with players since it was released and it has already produced its first ever Mega Jackpot winner, when a player landed the top prize when playing the game back in May 2020.
- Absolootly Mad: Mega Moolah
Just a few months after the Atlantean Treasures slot was released, the number of Mega Moolah slots available increased by one again in May 2020 when, after an initial limited edition release across a number of casinos, the Absolootly Mad Mega Moolah slot hit casinos for general release.
Based on the famous scene of the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party in the story of Alice’s Adventures in Wonderland by Lewis Carroll, this was another of the Mega Moolah slots that sought to offer something a little different to the original for players.
First off, this slot was a 243 Ways to Win slot, the first time that this option had been available on a Mega Moolah slot since the Dark Knight slot was retired a few years beforehand. Spins started at just 0.20 per spin and that meant that not every spin could be a winner, but each time you landed a Wild coin symbol anywhere on the reels, regardless of whether it was a winning spin or not, then that spin did stand a chance of triggering the Jackpot Bonus Wheel.
However, it was the inclusion of an exciting feature seen on other slots, Rolling Reels, that really broke the mould with Absolootly Mad. Not only was it the first of all Mega Moolah slots to offer this particular feature, it was also the first to have Multiplier Trails in the base game and during the Free Spins bonus game, where the values on the trail were increased from 1x, 2x, 3x and 5x, to 3x, 6x, 9x and 15x the standard wins.
This means that when it comes to what Mega Moolah slots are available right now, we have a total of seven we can play at the present moment. The four oldest games, the original, plus 5 Reel Drive, Summertime, Isis and then the three more recent releases, Atlantean Treasures, Mega Vault Millionaire and Absolootly Mad, although to play Mega Vault Millionaire you do need to have access and membership to a Casino Rewards casino, which you can find here.
This wide choice of slots means that now more than ever, any player wanting to play a specific type of game to play for the Mega Moolah jackpot prize, which at the time of writing hit 13 million, can now do so thanks to the excellent range of games available in the series today.
